I’m a guitarist. Here’s my story. When I graduated from high school three years ago, I
didn’t play guitar really seriously. So, I went to Ahuntsic College in Pure and Applied Sciences. As I was studying
there, I played a lot of guitar, so much that I almost failed all of my science courses. I realised that music was more important
than anything else so I got my diploma, put science aside, and came to Lionel Groulx College in jazz/pop music.
To be an accomplished musician, you must be able to play various styles of music. In my younger years, I had a heavy
metal band called Synexis, and I thought I would play heavy metal all my life. We recorded a demo in the summer of 2005, and
two months later, the band broke up. This event coincided with my arrival in Lionel Groulx’s Music department. I learned
a lot of non-heavy-metal songs there and realised that I really liked every style of music. I decided to do all I could to
become a professional musician. Now, I play popular songs such as Tears in Heaven or Hotel California with my
girlfriend in restaurants, and I have a tribute to Nightwish, a Finnish orchestral rock band. I’m planning to restart
my old band, Synexis, but I want to change my compositions so they would be more accessible.
To be able to know a lot of songs, a musician must have a good ear and a very good memory. Fortunately, I have those
two qualities. They help me when I’m trying to learn a song and I don’t have any partitions. It’s really
hard to study in Music because we have to practice at least three hours of our instrument each day, and that doesn’t
include listening homework and studying theory.
My goal is to go to university and obtain a PhD in Music, and then become a college or university teacher. I’ve already
taught in a music school for children and teenagers last winter and now I have some students who come to my house. Becoming
a great musician sure is important for me, but transmitting my knowledge is what I really want to do.
